Checking the arrival times for flights carrying friends and relatives is a smart move when they’re relying on you for transportation. Several factors influence flight schedules, including mechanical adjustments, passenger facilitation, flight traffic and weather. There’s no point arriving at an airport early if the plane you’re meeting is delayed. Make a status check of airline flights to confirm arrival times before driving to the airport.

Ask for flight information by phone. Call the carrier or the arriving airport information line to ask for a status check. Use the flight number or city of departure as reference to find out if the plane is expected to arrive on time.

Use an independent online flight tracker. The websites offer free real-time status checks for specific flights arriving at a chosen airport. Select an airline and type the flight number into the appropriate box. Set the arrival date accordingly.

Use the online flight status check offered by the airport. Most U.S. airports have online tools available for finding arrival times by typing in flight numbers or departure cities. Smaller airports, such as Colorado Springs, post the entire arrival schedule for the day on the status page.

Use online trackers presented by the carriers. Major airlines avoid customer calls by making status checks available on the Internet. Type in the flight number or departure city to find arrival times.

Many airline travelers are familiar with the manifold screening processes to which they are subjected before they are allowed to board their flight. However, much to the frustration of air passengers, processes are not uniform across the country and internationally. The Transportation Security Administration has set forth general security procedures that allow you to prepare for security screenings before you travel. Although you might not be subjected to all of these screenings, the procedure gives you an idea of what to expect.

Security Procedures at Check-In
When checking in with an airline to receive a boarding pass and drop off luggage, passengers will be asked to show a form of identification. Passengers must present a U.S. federal or state-issued photo ID such as a valid U.S. passport, driver’s license or military ID. If passengers are traveling internationally, they will be required to show a passport, as well as any travel visas required by the destination country. A series of security questions involving the check-in luggage will ensue. Passengers are advised to remove any locks from checked bags as they will pass through an X-ray machine and may be subject to hand searches. If the security personnel cannot unlock a bag, they will break the lock in order to examine the bag’s contents.

Baggage Screening at the Security Checkpoint
Passengers will be asked to present their boarding passes and IDs to the security personal at the line entrance. They are advised to remove shoes, jackets, jewelry and other metal objects in their pockets and place them in a bin. Laptops should be removed from their carrying cases and placed in a separate bin. All liquids must be placed in a quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag and one bag per passenger can be placed in the screening bin as a carry-on. Larger quantities of liquids, such as water bottles, much be surrendered to security. Passengers place all items, including carry-on luggage, on the conveyor belt to pass through an X-ray machine.

Passenger Screening at the Security Checkpoint
Passengers will pass through a metal detector when directed to do so by the security personnel with their boarding passes in hand. If the metal detector alarm does not sound, they may return to the conveyor belt to retrieve their items. Occasionally, they may be subjected to secondary screenings such as pat-downs, X-ray machines and hand searches of their carry-on luggage. They are advised to stay calm and cooperate with security personnel at all times.

Random Screenings
Passengers should be prepared for additional security procedures at the gate. Sometimes they will be subjected to additional screening after they have entered the secure area. Their passports may be scrutinized for a second time and they may be asked to cooperate in a random screening. Frequently, employees pass hand-held wands over them and hand search their luggage.

Five people were reported killed after a maritime reconnaissance Nomad plane of the Indonesian Navy crashed in East Kalimantan province on Monday.

Some of the bodies had been found, a source at the Balikpapan air base said. The plane with three crew members and six passengers on board met the accident on its flight from Long Bawan, Nunukan district, to Juwata airport in Tarakan city, East Kalimantan.

The three crew members were pilot 1st Lt. Erwin, co-pilot 1st Lt. Saiful and technician Sgt. Maj. Sodikin, while the identities of six passengers remained unknown.

There was no immediate report on the identities of those killed in the crash.
The ill-fated plane left Tarakan for Nunukan at 11.11 a.m. The plane was supposed to return back at Tarakan at 02.30 but crashed at Long Apung, Bulungan district, at 02.28 p.m., the source said.

A team of search and rescue workers had been sent to the crash site, it said. Spokesman for the Juwata airport Muhamad Nafiek said five people were killed and four others survived the accident. Chief of the Bulungan police resort Adj. Chief Coms. Pumal Barus said two teams of rescue workers had been fielded to the scene to evacuate the victims.

Spokesman of the Indonesian Navy, Commodore Iskandar Sitompul, said in Jakarta earlier in the day that the Nomad plane was on a routine patrol flight. It was carrying nine crew members and passengers on board.

The Indonesian and Australian air forces on Monday began a four-day joint exercise in Darwin, Australia`s Northern Territory. Indonesia was represented in the exercise, dubbed “Elang Ausindo 2009″ , by four F-16 fighter planes and Australia by seven F-18s.

An Indonesian Air Force spokesman, Air Commodore Bambang Samudro, said the joint exercise was participated in by 45 men from the Indonesian Air Force`s Air Squadron III based at Iswahyudi, East Java, and personnel from the Royal Australian Air Force`s Squadron 77.

“After the opening ceremony today a training area adjustment session will be conducted while air maneuver technique session will start on Tuesday. The whole Indonesia team will return home on September 5,” Samudro said.

Air personnel from both countries would practice air maneuvers and air battle tactics, he said. He said this training was a continuation of a previous one held in Makassar, South Sulawesi, two years ago. “Cooperation between the air forces of the two counries has been running well,” he said.

The Elang Ausindo 2009 was officially opened by Commodore Neil Heart and Commodore Bambang Samudro. It was also attended by the defense attache of the Indonesian embassy (KBRI) in Canberra , Vice Marshal Kuswantoro, seven officers of the Indonesian Air Force Headquarters and the Indonesian Consul in Darwin, Harbangan Napitupulu.

Based on the record of KBRI in Canberra, defense cooperation between the Indonesian and Australian armed forces started in 1968 with a joint mapping program in Indonesia. But since the 1980s, the cooperation was done through an institution called “Indonesia-Australia Defense Program” (DCP) which held annual meetings either in Australia or Indonesia.

Some cooperation activities carried out through DKP were joint exercises called Kartika-Kangaroo (Army), Albatros (Air Force), Kakadu, Casooary, Passex and Cakrawala Baru with patrol ships and Nomad airplanes).

Although the cooperation was disturbed due to the East Timor problem in 1999 and all DCP activities, except education programs, were ceased, the two sides resumed the bilateral cooperation based on an agreement signed at an informal meeting of Indonesian and Australian forein ministry oficials in 2001

The Indonesian and Australian air forces will conduct a week-long joint exercise code-named Elang Aus-Indo in Darwin starting on Monday, a spokesman said. The joint exercise would involve the two air forces` jet fighters, spokesman for the El Tari air base in Kupang 1st Lt. Dedy said on Sunday.

The Indonesian air force would send at least 87 of its personnel and four F16 jet fighters and two Hercules planes to the activity, he said. On Sunday, some of the planes landed at the El Tari air base as a home base during the joint exercise, he said.

“Admittedly, the joint exercise will take place in Darwin. But the El Tari air base will serve as a home base for the Indonesian Air Force personnel and fleet,” he said.
